Faith in the Resurrection: Only God is Immortal
Alright, Muscle Dogg here, and today we’re talkin’ about faith in the resurrection—because the Bible makes it clear that we are NOT immortal. Only God has immortality, and we don’t receive it until Jesus returns to gather His people, both the living and the dead.
A lot of folks believe that when we die, we immediately go to heaven, but that’s not what the Bible teaches. The dead in Christ are asleep, waiting for the day Jesus calls them back to life. Let’s break down what the Bible actually says about life, death, and the hope we have in the resurrection.
Many people believe the soul is naturally immortal, but the Bible says otherwise. 1 Timothy 6:15-16 makes it crystal clear:
“God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see.”
That means:
• Only God has immortality by nature.
• Human beings do NOT have immortal souls—we are mortal.
• Eternal life is a gift that comes through Jesus, not something we already have.
If we were already immortal, why would we need resurrection?
If people went straight to heaven when they died, why does the Bible describe death as sleep?
John 11:11-14 tells us how Jesus spoke about Lazarus:
“Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.” His disciples replied, “Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better.” Jesus had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought He meant natural sleep. So then He told them plainly, ‘Lazarus is dead.’”
That means:
• Jesus Himself compared death to sleep—not a conscious afterlife.
• The dead are NOT in heaven or hell yet—they are waiting for resurrection.
• God’s people will rise when Jesus calls them, just like He did for Lazarus.
The dead in Christ are not awake in heaven—they are resting in hope.
We don’t receive immortality when we die—we receive it when Jesus returns.
1 Corinthians 15:51-53 says:
“Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.”
That means:
• We are mortal until Jesus returns.
• At the resurrection, we receive immortality and a glorified body.
• Jesus gathers His people—both the dead and the living—when He comes again.
We don’t “go to heaven” when we die—we wait for the resurrection.
The Bible is clear—only God is immortal, the dead are asleep, and we receive eternal life when Jesus returns. Satan’s lie in the Garden—“You shall not surely die” (Genesis 3:4)—has fooled many, but God’s truth stands firm.
So, let me ask you: Are you putting your faith in man-made ideas, or are you standing on the promise of the resurrection? Are you trusting in Jesus to give you eternal life when He returns?
Hold onto the truth. Jesus is coming, and when He does, the dead in Christ will rise, and we will be changed. Keep your faith strong, stay in the Word, and look forward to that glorious day!
Eternal life is not something we already have—it’s a gift that comes through Jesus at His return. The dead are asleep, waiting, and when the trumpet sounds, they will rise to meet the Lord.
Stay strong, stay faithful, and keep your eyes on the resurrection—because that’s where our hope is!
